May Update - Rollout Timeline, Software Updates, 1080p & Backlit Key Photos
about 7 years ago – Tue, May 02, 2017 at 01:03:37 AM

To our Superbook backer community, early supporters, and the Sentio family - welcome to our early May update!

It’s been another busy month with a lot to update you on. We’ll be going over software, hardware, and Superbook testing / rollout updates. There is a lot to read as usual, but please read everything if you can spare the time -- we don’t want you to miss anything!

Administrivia

TL;DR: Always short, please read.

  • We will *actually* be switching to bi-weekly updates now. Hope we don’t flood your inbox!
  • To avoid our email going to your spam box, please add [email protected] to your contacts list in your email account.
  • We are moving most of our communication to backers to only Slack and email. If you’re looking for an immediate answer to a question, join our Backer Slack group here.

What to expect in the coming months

TL;DR: Lot's to do still. We will be as transparent and communicate as much as possible.

This is a note from Andrew, the Chief Update Writer of Sentio.

Test phones are here! Can you spot yours?
Test phones are here! Can you spot yours?

Hi everyone, I wanted to say again to all of you as we near the month of June that we appreciate both your patience and your support in bringing the Superbook to life. We’ve made a tremendous amount of progress over the past 8 months since the Kickstarter campaign ended, and we are thankful to have backers who are as excited about supporting our product concept as they are about getting the product itself. Thank you to all of the backers who are providing software bug testing on the Sentio Desktop app, suggesting features in the #feature_suggestions Slack channel, and generally providing us with moral support as we go through the highs and lows of making a product for the first time.

In the spirit of continued transparency and generally realistic expectations, I want to provide to you the picture of where we are today and what we need to accomplish in the next month. As of today, we are getting our components ready for the manufacturing process for the first 500 units. This is a critically important batch, which will cement our confidence in producing the remaining 19,500 units successfully. We are also far along in the process of the dozens of certifications needed for the various components of the Superbook: FCC, CE, UL, the list goes on. Certification is a many weeks process that ensures that our product is safe to use around the world and meets the high quality of standards consumers expect. Especially after Samsung’s battery fiasco last year, the requirements are stringent and the consequences of failing certification are severe.

Over the next month, there will be a lot of milestones we will need to hit, and we will keep you all posted as we go through them. Realistically, we should expect some good wins, but also some hiccups as well. Above all else, I promise we will communicate better than any other crowdfunding campaign during the final months of shipping to give you confidence that we are doing everything we can to bring you a product you can be proud to have helped bring to life.

Thank you all deeply.

Andrew

Superbook Rollout Timeline & Backer Portal

TL;DR: Timeline for the next couple months; Backer portal launches soon

The emails for the First 100 and First 500 beta testers have gone out, and we are quickly approaching rollout. To help you guys get a good sense of what the next couple months look like process wise, here’s a timeline of when major things will happen (exact dates for things further out become harder to estimate):

  • May 7th: Golden Sample of Superbooks (5-10 units) will be created for testing purposes
  • May 15th: Mid-Month Update + access to our newly built Backer Portal (more below)
  • May 29-31st: First 500 units shipped out for beta testing. 100 units will be shipped out via air, 400 units will be shipped out via ocean freight.
  • June 1st: June Update, with updates on production and shipping for the first 500 batch
  • Early June: User interviews and feedback from the First 100 units
  • June 15th: Mid-June Update, with updates on early feedback and results
  • 3rd-4th week of June: User interviews and feedback from the remainder of the First 500 Units. If all goes well, mass production begins.

As mentioned above, in the next 2 weeks, we are sending out login access to our newly built Backer Portal. This will be in lieu of sending out a survey. On there you will be able to:

  • Change your shipping address - you will have 2 weeks time to make this change, after which we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to change it.
  • Make certain changes to your order (e.g. adjust cords & charger types)
  • Find your personal Lifetime Backer Code, to get your $25 off future orders of the Superbook
  • And more as we build things out

Major Sentio Desktop Update

TL;DR: New UI, new features, and a lot more to come for Sentio Desktop

Over the past few months, we’ve been working hard on a revamp of Sentio Desktop, adding in some super useful features as well as a UX overhaul. While there are still plenty of major features and design elements remaining on the immediate roadmap, I thought I’d share some of the latest changes to the app (which all of you can download the early beta in the Play Store). As always, if you run into bugs, please report it on the #sentio_bugs channel in our Backer Slack.

Task Bar

This is what most of you have been asking for. While it’s not available in this release, we will be sending out a limited preview of the multi-window functionality to backers in the coming weeks. Get excited!

Early Photos of 1080p and Backlit Keys

TL;DR: Photos.

Many of you have asked to see photos of the 1080p unit and the backlit keys. The reason we haven’t been able to show photos to date is because we have to front load the more challenging hardware tasks (as those are more risky and have longer lead times). Adding a 1080p LCD screen is a fairly straight-forward process, and while the firmware work for backlit keyboard is non-trivial, it does fall to the “less challenging” bucket in the overall project scope.

That said, we have some early photos of what the 1080p Screen color and the Backlit keyboard looks like. This is an early snapshot on a pre-production unit - so ignore the color of the shell and the side of the Superbook, which is not fully assembled in the photo.

Taken on Florian’s potato camera, but shows you that the Superbook screen is matching / surpassing the color clarity of his smartphone.

April Update - Software, Hardware, and Shipping News
about 7 years ago – Sun, Apr 02, 2017 at 01:32:14 AM

To our backer community - welcome to our April update!

We'll be going over software and hardware development over the past month, and we'll also share with you how we'll ship out the units. There is a lot to read, so for those of you in a hurry, we're introducing a TL;DR to each section ;)

Administrivia:

TL;DR: Already pretty short. Read it!

  • We'll send out another survey closer to shipping deadline, so if you're worried about cord selection or a new address, you don't need to worry!
  • Refunds have been closed since last year and will remain closed
  • Also, as June is quickly approaches we'll be switching to bi-weekly updates! :)

Sentio Desktop update (and a sneak preview!)

TL;DR: A lot of new changes to the stability and UX/UI of Sentio Desktop

  • We’ve been working hard at fixing a few critical bugs for our Sentio app -- that I’m sure those of you who’ve tried our Beta app know about ;) -- and re-working some of our core algorithms so that we have a safer architecture to build on top of, and a smoother, less laggy, experience for everyone. If you run into bugs, please report it on the #sentio_bugs channel in our Backer Slack.
  • We've extended 3rd-party app support (with a demo coming next month), and added a few features to the File Explorer and Browser: better search and UI, more tabs, and double window functionality for the browser.
  • If you have any great ideas for what you want to see, please share them on the #feature_suggestions channels in our Backer Slack - we'd love to hear about what you want to see on our app.

As a treat for April, we're giving you a sneak preview of the design concept we have been working on for the Sentio Desktop. Note that this is what we're working towards, but many factors will determine how much is ready at launch time and a lot may still change from the design concept.

Ooh, what's this?
Ooh, what's this?

Hardware update

TL;DR: Hardware on schedule, with shipping broken up in batches starting late May.

Overall, hardware production is on schedule! Our major components are ordered and we’re in the validation testing process. Assuming things continue to stay on this track, we'll hit the shipment timeline as laid out above, no problem. :)

Hardware shipping timeline a.k.a. the fun of the first few Superbook batches

This is a note from Andrew, the CEO of Sentio.

The history of hardware Kickstarters is filled with incredible stories of success and failure…but mostly failure. Why? Hardware is challenging to design, expensive to make, and near impossible to fix once things are set. Not to mention shipping is crazy expensive, but I’ll get to that later.

One of the main challenges is testing and quality assurance, where we put products through a variety of tests to simulate real-life situations, such as having the product dropped from a distance, applying pressure to it, leaving it in hot temperatures, or simply using the product for its intended use one too many times. This crucial step is challenging to get right, even for large companies like Samsung, who ran into disastrous battery problems in its Note 7 smartphone last year (and we all remember what happened with those phones) - let alone tiny startups like us launching a hardware product for the first time.

Real talk - Chances are, things won’t be entirely perfect on the first try. We’re putting Superbooks through a rigorous testing and quality control process and UL & CE certifications as well as UL, CE, CCC, and UN 38.3 certifications for the battery. Still, the likelihood that things go perfectly when we ship out the very first few Superbooks is, well, let’s just say it’s not 100%. There will be scenarios we won’t have tested for that surface in the real world. We’re also a small team working on a big project - 11 people to be exact (5 software, 3 hardware, 2 sales / support and me) - so dealing with a massive recall or major support burden will be difficult if we ship out 20,000 Superbooks and a significant number of them have hardware issues.

So here’s the deal. We’re going to send out a first shipment of 500 units for early testing. These will likely be shipped from our facility (exact timing to come in the May update). Logistically, as we can only set up one manufacturing line, the first 500 units will have to be the 768p units, which means if you are getting the base Superbook, you’ll be eligible to receive one of the first 500 units.

Roughly 100 of these units will be air-shipped, meaning those backers will get immediately (i.e. within a few days), but the rest of the 400 units will be ocean-freighted, which will take a few more weeks to get to its destination. We'll have a few weeks of usage data, user reports, and debugging, to help us troubleshoot the issues that are likely to occur, and only then we will start production of the remaining 19,500 units in batches.

This will prevent us from encountering the nightmare scenario where we ship out 20k units all at once, and then face the need recall every single one of them of them due to a major fault in hardware. Shipping, VAT, and customs fees are really expensive (combined, they result in an additional ~$25-40 per unit) - and while we can definitely handle a few hundred units to be replaced, a few thousand or more would get difficult to manage. We hope that you can understand our goal as a small company to get you your Superbooks as soon as possible while also making sure we don’t make any catastrophic mistakes.

So what does this mean for you - and in what order your Superbook ship? Here’s the breakdown:

  • FIRST 100 UNITS
    - When would I get my Superbook? Estimated to ship sometime in late May / early June

    - How do I qualify? If you are getting a Gold or Blue 768p Superbook, we can send you your Superbook in this early batch.

***However, to qualify for the FIRST 100, we are looking for backers who are willing to Skype / video call with our team as they are unboxing and using their Superbooks for the first time. This will allow us to better understand the user experience, as well as troubleshoot and diagnose any issues that come up.

    - Where do I sign up? For backers of the 768p Superbook, you’ll be receiving an email to opt into the FIRST 100 or the 101-500 group. If you opt into the FIRST 100, we will contact you prior to shipping to schedule a time with our team for a 30 minute video call.
  • #100-500 UNITS
    - When would I get my Superbook? Estimated to ship sometime in late May / early June, and arriving a few weeks after depending on shipping location.

    - How do I qualify? If you are getting a Gold or Blue 768p Superbook, we can send you your Superbook in this early batch.

    - Where do I sign up?  For backers of the 768p Superbook, you’ll be receiving an email to opt into the FIRST 100 or the 101-500 group.
  • #500+ UNITS
    - When would I get my Superbook?
Depending on the results of the first 500 units, estimated to ship starting in late June in batches. Superbooks will be shipped out based on your order position, but your final delivery date will be a combination of ship date and your location (certain countries are very difficult to ship to). Everyone not part of the first 500 units will receive an order position, which will determine when their shipment goes out as each batch of Superbooks get made.

    - Your order position is determined by: If you opted in to receive your Superbook from the early batches, OR your order # on Kickstarter (earlier backers receive sooner)

    - How do I find out my shipping position? We will be sending out access to a website in the next month that will show you your order position (along with ways to improve your order position, e.g. opting in)

One more caveat:

We will do everything in our power in the testing and quality control process to catch issues. However, if there are major issues that result from the first 500 units, we would have to diagnose and correct those issues which would result in further delays. We want to be realistic and transparent to our backers to let you know that this is a possibility, but we're striving and working hard around the clock to ensure that this does not happen, period.

Note about Superbook charger

TL;DR: We heard you. More details to come on a potential compromise add-on, as team is entirely focused on Superbook production.

One thing I (still Andrew) wanted to apologize for is how we handled breaking the news around the DC charger. Paraphrasing a bit from my note in the Backer Slack group, we realize that a lot of backers felt strongly for keeping USB charging as our charging option. When we launched the Superbook, we priced out charging the Superbook using a Micro-B port. The cost of the component and implementation was reasonable, which made providing the product at the $99 pricing for Kickstarter possible. Type C charging was always out of the realm of possibility, mainly due to price of implementation.

For Micro-B charging, in our latest testing the charging took far too long. At 6500 x 7.4v, the Micro-B charger we’re able to source would take 10+ hours to charge the Superbook. For those of you asking why you can charge smartphones faster with the Micro-B, it's because standard smartphones use roughly 10-11 whr of capacity, while the Superbook requires roughly 4x the capacity (6500 × 7.4v) = ~48whr.

We were thus faced with two options: to either source a charger that takes 10-11 hours to charge via Micro-B, or to source a charger with a DC port, which is far faster. We chose to go with the standard DC port for a number of reasons, but of course we know there are people that would have preferred to put up with 2-3x the charging times to get USB charging. For us, the primary reason for our decision was that we assumed most people would charge the Superbook at home or in the office, and then take it with them (without the charger) when they needed to be mobile.

However, we also recognize and hear the needs of our backer and supporter community; this is obviously not a universally-pleasing decision -- although if we've learnt anything at all while working on this Kickstarter campaign, it's that there just isn't way to make everyone happy. One solution we’ve come up with for those of you that really want USB C charging and are willing to pay for it is that we can source an adapter that would make USB C charging from a high quality USB C cord possible.

We know that this is possible, but we still don’t have a confident estimate of how much this would cost as our hardware team has been heads down pushing the Superbook production to the finish line. As the current testing process for the Superbook finishes up, we will have more information for everyone. Right now it seems possible and a working balance for us to strike between offering a working solution and not having the cost make the project economically unfeasible!

Extra uses for the Superbook!

TL;DR: Chromebooks work, and Superbook can fully power PC stick

Additionally on hardware, we have verified some new fun things you can do with your Superbook, including having it be a dual display with a Chromebook as well as power / run a PC stick directly from the Superbook.

See the videos / photos below:

Superbook powers the PC stick by itself and also works with USB headphone jack accessory

New team member

Nearly March Update - hardware, hardware, and hardware!
about 7 years ago – Mon, Feb 27, 2017 at 11:09:16 PM

Dear backers and early supporters,

Andrew here, cofounder and CEO of Sentio. I'm writing to you from Barcelona, as we get ready to present The Superbook by Sentio to the folks at Mobile World Congress. We’re finalists for the ‘Disrupted by Mobile Award’, and I have the pleasure of sharing with the world our product - the product that each and everyone of you helped bring to life. However, before we share the Superbook with the world, I think it is only fair that I share it with all of you. So here is a major hardware update for your eyes first.

First, before diving in, a small request. If you’re at MWC and you are press or work at a telecom, OEM, or related partner in the mobile space, reach out to me directly at [email protected] or come by our booth at L4.5 in Hall 8, Fira Montjuic. We are in the 4YFN section of MWC, where the startups are.

Second regarding timeline, we are still on track to ship in June. We are in the middle of the tooling process, with the appropriate amount of time set aside for testing, certification, and logistics. Most of our major components are covered for, and we should be seeing our early testing units towards the end of March. Thank you to all of the wonderful backers who have offered to be early testers at the risk of getting slightly less-than-ideal units. While we haven’t confirmed anyone for the program yet (mainly out of other priorities at the moment), you’ll get an email closer to ship date.

OK, now the good stuff

So with more ado, here are the photos of the updated (and mostly final) design for the Gold superbook (taken on my Pixel, while writing this):

Gold Superbook
Gold Superbook

Side view, showing the power port, type A accessories port, and the type C connector port. Note that these prototypes still need some fine tuning around the fit of the shell, which will get resolved as tooling is being completed. Additionally, as we mentioned in our Backer Slack, the power port is DC instead of a Micro-B as charging via Micro-B USB was incredibly incredibly slow during the testing process. All backers will receive DC chargers fit for their locale.

Look at that logo <3
Look at that logo <3

Slightly more straight on and you can see how nicely the Sentio logo came out.

Here’s the other side, and you can see just how sleek the new tapered edge is.

And finally a quick shot from the back.

The Superbook logo will likely change between now and shipping. We’re experimenting with some ideas, including my personal favorite:

The Gold Superbook in action, along side early prototypes of the Black and Silver. Not pictured here is the Kickstarter Special BLUE which will be revealed after the special batch is made (and then never made again).

The Keyboard

One thing that will change in the final version of the Superbook is the keyboard layout. We’ve taken the liberty to design our own keyboard layout, complete with a few surprises! :) Here’s the current layout:

Superbook keyboard layout
Superbook keyboard layout

There are a number of unique flourishes on our keyboard. First off, the three Android navigation keys have been updated and sit on the top left side of the keyboard. We also have controls for screen and backlit key brightness (for those of you who upgraded), along with the all purpose ‘Search’ key. We have also put in our Sentio key, which you’ll be able to map with Sentio to do custom keyboard controls.

Quick word on app release

Our latest release is out. Although you won't be able to tell from the app itself, we made some major infrastructure improvements to make the app more stable, along with other framework improvements. One major change to note is that we’ve separated the main ‘OS’ app Sentio from the basic apps pack, Sentio Apps. This is to add additional flexibility and stability to the experience. Check them both out, and let us know about bugs (there are definitely some outstanding) and suggestions.

Finally, a few other things

  • In case you missed it, everyone will be getting a new survey to fill out their shipping address a month prior to shipping. If your address changed to somewhere with a higher shipping fee, there will be no extra payments needed - we got you.
  • Have you joined our Backer community on Slack yet? If not, request an invite!
  • We’re posting preview videos and photos of the Superbook on our Instagram - follow us to get the latest.
  • The Superbook is up for the ‘Innovations in Connecting People’ award at SXSW. Let us know if you’ll be there to root us on!

Until next time, and with undying love,

❤ Team Sentio

February Update - the #Freedom2Learn Campaign and more!
over 7 years ago – Tue, Jan 31, 2017 at 11:33:50 PM

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the February update!

Upcoming conferences

Want to meet the Sentio team in person? Itching to pitch a business proposal? We'll be attending some conferences over the next few months:

  • February: Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona
  • March:  SXSW in Austin, Texas

Reach out to [email protected] to set up a time to meet up with us at these conferences - we're excited to see what our backers are up to!

Finally, we're excited to announce that we're a 4YFN finalist in the Mobile category - make sure to catch us pitch-battling other startups on stage at MWC!

So why Sentio?

As promised in the previous update, we’re here to give some more context behind why we chose Sentio as our new name (in addition to it being shorter and easier to spell).

When we came up with Sentio we were struck with how well its meaning fit into our vision for the company as a whole. Sentio is rooted in 3 words, from different origins:

  • sent meaning to feel (Proto-Indo-European)
  • sintėti meaning to think, to perceive (Lithuanian)
  • sinnan meaning to go (Old High German)

To Feel. To Think. To Go.

With our technology, it is our hope to enable each and every Superbook user to tap into the parts of themselves that feel and the parts that perceive, and equip them with the ability to actualize those perceptions and feelings.

We know from the conversations we’ve had with our backers that this community is a diverse one. Everyone intends to use their Superbooks for a different purpose - some for work, some for travel, and some even for art! Owning a Superbook frees and empowers you to create and act on your feelings and your perceptions, whatever they may be, whenever and wherever inspiration may strike.

We’re ecstatic that we found a name that so perfectly encapsulates our values and goals as a company. We’ll always remember our good ol’ days as Andromium, but we sure won’t miss all the times that our own team members accidentally misspelled it…)

#Freedom2Learn update

Last week, Sentio team members Andrew and Luke traveled to South Africa to meet with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, who will receive the #Freedom2Learn donations of Superbooks! Here's an update direct from Andrew:

This week, we were able to make a brief stop in Johannesburg, South Africa where we met with Robert Coutts, CEO of the Mandela Day Library project and founder of the Participate for Good campaign along with our partner at MediaTek. We discussed the potential impact of the Superbook for schools in South Africa, especially in regions where access to technology and educational content is very limited. Thanks to you, our incredible backers, we will be donating nearly 500 Superbooks to the Nelson Mandela School Libraries project and the #Freedom2Learn Campaign.

Our team believes strongly in the impact of making technology accessible for everyone. We’re excited to keep you all posted, especially those of you who donated, on the progress of our pilot implementation with the Mandela Day Library schools. If you are involved in education or philanthropy and would like to discuss potential partnerships with us, please email us at [email protected]

P.S. We also picked up these sweet bracelets while we were in Johannesburg. If you’d like to learn more about and support the Mandela Day libraries project, check them out here.

- Andrew

We're starting an office in Vietnam!

This month, our software engineers Karthik, Kevin, and Jesse moved to Vietnam together in hopes of starting a new office there (in addition to the one we have in SF). They're looking to bring on new software developers to the team, and are settling in nicely. Here's a picture of them in their new digs:

Thumbs up!

January Update: Sentio Rebrand, App Preview Video, Hardware Preview
over 7 years ago – Fri, Jan 20, 2017 at 10:43:44 PM

Welcome to our (short but sweet) January update!

Andromium is now Sentio.

We're rebranding our company and renaming Andromium to Sentio. We're still the same company with the same people working on the same product - just with a new name and logo.

Why? In short, we wanted a name with fewer syllables that was easier to spell. Of course, many other factors were taken into consideration as we made the decision - we're excited to share some of the meaning behind the word Sentio in the next update.

Note: getsuperbook.com now forwards to sentio.com, and all of our social media channels have made the switch over to the new name. Don't be alarmed, it's still us!

We're on Instagram!

We also launched our new Instagram account - follow us at @getsuperbook for exciting content -- for example, special previews of the software running on the Superbook ... ;)

App preview

For this month's app previews, we have a some productivity apps (Slack & Monospace), followed by another game app preview (Need for Speed).

Want us to feature an app that we haven't already covered yet? Leave a comment below - we're always looking for suggestions.

Hardware Preview

Our CTO Gordon has been in Shenzhen for the last week, working on the ground with our manufacturers. Here are some shots of the latest prototype (with our new logo)!

Our community

Since our last update, our Slack community has blossomed to include more than 350 active users. It's a great place for discussion with your fellow backers. In addition, it's currently the fastest way to reach our team members (especially our CEO Andrew)!

Go to the previous update for instructions on how to join the Slack community - we'd love to see you there.

As a reminder, we don't recommend you contact us via Kickstarter message / comments if you have an urgent question - please email us ([email protected]) or message us in the Slack channel for the fastest results.

Shoutouts!

Finally, we'd like to give shoutouts to Griffin Windheuser and JJ for helping us address the Kickstarter comments we missed, and to our Slack users for keeping the discussion informative but also fun (@tlammert, @sentionium_rollus, and countless more).

We're thrilled to see our backers helping out one another - your efforts don't go unnoticed!

On the delay...

In the last few weeks, we've received some awesome (and informative) feedback from all of our backers. We thank everyone who took the time to write us, and hope that you felt your voice was heard in the process.

While we received a fair amount of messages expressing disappointment and frustration, we received far more kind words of support, full of understanding and empathy for the reasons why we delayed the shipping date.

As creators, this means the world to us.

Thank you for being an early supporter of the Superbook, and thank you for your continued support - it is truly what keeps us going.

See you in the February update!

With undying love,

❤︎ Team Sentio (formerly Andromium)
